How to Install Hazel & Willow Panels

Hazel and willow panels are a natural and attractive way to create privacy, define boundaries, and enhance your outdoor space. Correct installation is essential to ensure your fencing remains secure, stable, and long-lasting.

Materials Required

• Hazel or willow fencing panels
• Timber fence posts
• Post hole digger or spade
• Concrete or post-mix cement
• Spirit level
• Jute rope or galvanised wire
• Wire cutters or scissors

Choosing the Correct Posts

For a strong and secure installation, we recommend using fence posts that are 2 feet (600mm) longer than the height of your panels.

For example:

This allows approximately 2 feet of the post to be installed below ground level, providing the stability needed to support the panels.

Setting the Posts

1. Mark the position of each post along your fence line.
2. Dig post holes approximately 2 feet deep.
3. Position the post in the hole and use a spirit level to ensure it is vertical.
4. Fill the hole with concrete or post-mix cement and allow it to set according to the manufacturer's instructions.
5. Repeat for all posts before attaching the panels.

Why We Recommend Cementing Posts

We strongly recommend cementing posts into the ground. Concrete helps to:

• Improve overall fence stability.
• Reduce movement caused by wind and weather.
• Minimise water sitting directly against the timber below ground level.
• Help protect the posts from premature rot and deterioration.

Attaching the Panels

Once the posts are securely installed and the concrete has cured:

1. Position the hazel or willow panel against the posts.
2. Secure the panel using either jute rope or galvanised wire.
3. Fasten the panel to each post at three points:
   • Top
   • Middle
   • Bottom
4. Repeat this on both sides of every panel for maximum strength and support.

Using multiple fixing points helps distribute the load evenly and prevents the panels from shifting over time.

Both options provide an effective method of securing panels:

• Jute Rope – Offers a traditional, natural appearance that complements rustic fencing.
• Galvanised Wire – Provides a strong, durable fixing with excellent weather resistance.

For best results, ensure all fixings are pulled tight and checked periodically as natural materials may settle over time.

After installation:

• Confirm all posts are upright and secure.
• Check that each panel is firmly attached at the top, middle, and bottom.
